Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content, data and wider brand presence so that AI answer engines cite, quote or recommend you when they generate a response. A "generative engine" here means any AI system that answers a question directly rather than handing back a list of links: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude all qualify.

The term is not marketing invention. It comes from a 2023 academic paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, later published at the ACM KDD 2024 conference. The researchers defined generative engines as systems that synthesise an answer from multiple sources, and showed that specific content changes measurably increase how often a source is surfaced in those answers. That is the whole game: not where you rank, but whether the model reaches for you when it writes.

You will also see the term AEO (answer engine optimization) used almost interchangeably, and sometimes AIO (AI optimization). The distinctions are mostly academic. AEO tends to emphasise winning the single, direct answer to a question; GEO emphasises being one of the sources an AI weaves into a longer generated response. In practice you are optimising for the same behaviour — being the thing the machine trusts enough to repeat.

02How is GEO different from SEO?

Traditional SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of getting your pages to rank in a list of blue links so a person clicks through to your site. The unit of success is a ranking position and the click it earns. GEO changes the unit of success to a citation — a mention, quote or recommendation inside an AI-generated answer, where there may be no list of ten links at all and often no click.

That single shift cascades into several real differences:

  • Goal: SEO aims to rank; GEO aims to be referenced or recommended inside the answer itself.
  • Metric: SEO tracks rankings, impressions and clicks; GEO tracks citations, brand mentions and "share of voice" across AI responses.
  • Result format: SEO competes for ten positions on a page; an AI answer may synthesise three to eight sources into a few sentences, so the field is narrower and winner-takes-more.
  • Content shape: SEO rewards comprehensive pages; GEO rewards self-contained, extractable passages — a paragraph or list that makes sense lifted out of the page entirely.
  • Click behaviour: SEO assumes a click; GEO often resolves the query without one, so visibility increasingly means being named, not just being clickable.

There is also a sourcing difference worth understanding, because it changes where you place your effort. The platforms do not all fetch information the same way. Google's AI Overviews lean heavily on its existing organic index — analyses of cited sources consistently find the vast majority come from pages already ranking near the top of organic results. Perplexity runs live web searches for nearly every query and always shows its citations, which makes content freshness and crawlability decisive. ChatGPT blends its training data with real-time retrieval and tends to cite a different, often smaller set of domains. The headline implication: there is no single AI search engine to "win", and a domain cited heavily by one is frequently absent from another.

03Where do GEO and SEO overlap?

Despite the different scoreboard, GEO is not a replacement for SEO — it sits on top of it. The two share most of their foundations, and ignoring that is the most common way agencies waste money chasing "AI optimisation" as if it were a separate discipline.

Google has been unusually blunt about this. Its Search Central documentation on AI features states plainly that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no new machine-readable files to create, and no special schema.org markup that unlocks inclusion. To be eligible, a page simply needs to be indexed and able to appear in normal search snippets. In Google's words, the way to succeed in AI features is the same as the way to succeed in Search: create helpful, reliable, people-first content and make sure it is technically accessible.

So the shared base layer is large: crawlability and indexing, fast and stable pages, clean internal linking, content that genuinely matches intent, and demonstrable expertise and trust (what Google frames as experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, or E-E-A-T). If a model cannot crawl your page, or your organic authority is thin, GEO tactics have nothing to stand on. GEO is best understood as a layer that makes already-good content easier for a generative engine to extract, attribute and trust — not a parallel universe with its own rulebook.

04How do you get cited in AI answers?

Getting cited is a function of three things: being retrievable, being extractable, and being corroborated. Retrievable means the AI can find and read you. Extractable means it can lift a clean, self-contained claim from your page. Corroborated means other independent sources say the same thing, so the model trusts it. The practical work below maps onto those three.

1. Answer the question first, then elaborate. Put a tight, direct answer in the opening 40 to 70 words of any page built to win a query, then expand underneath. Generative engines reward passages that resolve the question cleanly and can be quoted without surrounding context. Front-load the conclusion; save the throat-clearing for never.

2. Write in extractable chunks. Use clear question-style headings, short declarative sentences, definitions on first use, comparison tables and bulleted lists. The original GEO research found that adding cited statistics, quotations and clear, authoritative phrasing meaningfully increased a source's visibility in generated answers. Structure that a model can parse into a single fact is structure that gets reused.

3. Publish original, first-party data. This is the single biggest lever for a premium B2B brand. Surveys, benchmarks, anonymised client results, pricing breakdowns and proprietary observations are things no competitor can copy and no aggregator can pre-empt. Primary sources get cited far more consistently than rehashed industry commentary, because an AI looking for a defensible fact will reach for the origin of that fact. If you want to be the source, become a source.

4. Build consensus across third-party sources. AI systems gain confidence when a brand shows up consistently — with similar positioning — across independent places: industry publications, reputable review and comparison sites, YouTube, LinkedIn and relevant community discussions. This "consensus signal" is why off-page presence now matters as much for GEO as backlinks did for classic SEO. One polished page on your own domain is a claim; the same claim echoed across trusted third parties is evidence.

5. Keep it current and dated. Freshness is weighted heavily, especially by engines that search live. Update cornerstone pages on a schedule, show a visible "last updated" date, and reference the current year where it is genuinely relevant rather than as a gimmick. Stale examples and dead statistics quietly lose citations over time.

6. Use structured data for clarity, not as a shortcut. Schema markup for organisations, articles, products, reviews and FAQs helps engines understand entities and relationships and supports your broader search presence. Just hold the right expectation: Google has explicitly said there is no magic AI schema, so treat structured data as good hygiene that reinforces meaning, not a cheat code into the answer box.

05How do you measure GEO?

Measurement is where most teams stall, because the familiar dashboards do not capture it. Your rank tracker cannot see a ChatGPT answer, and traditional analytics struggle to attribute a sale that began with an AI recommendation and ended with a direct visit days later.

Track three things instead. First, citation presence: how often, and for which prompts, your brand or pages are named across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. A growing category of AI-visibility tools automates this by running representative prompts on a schedule; you can also do it manually for your highest-value questions. Second, share of voice: when an engine answers a buying-intent question in your category, how often does it mention you versus competitors. Third, referral and qualitative signals: watch for referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics, and — for high-ticket B2B especially — simply ask new leads how they found you. "ChatGPT recommended you" is now a real and increasingly common answer.

Set expectations accordingly. Because results vary by platform and AI answers are non-deterministic, GEO measurement is about trend and frequency across many prompts, not a single fixed position. Measure repeatedly, not once.

06Should you do GEO instead of SEO?

No — you do GEO because of SEO. The right framing for 2026 is not "GEO versus SEO" as a choice but as two outputs of one well-built content operation. Strong organic foundations make you eligible for AI citation; GEO refinements make the already-eligible content easy to extract, attribute and trust. Teams that scrap SEO to chase AI typically lose both, because they remove the index presence the AI engines draw from in the first place.

For a premium or high-ticket business, the strategic prize is specific. AI answers compress a category to a handful of named options, and being one of those named options at the research stage is worth far more than a mid-page ranking ever was. The brands that win will be the ones publishing genuinely useful, original, well-structured material and reinforcing it across trusted third parties — which, conveniently, is exactly what good marketing looked like before any of this. GEO has not replaced the work. It has raised the reward for doing it properly.
